Beirut Civic Center
A space for the community

Project description

The Beirut Civic Center is an adaptive reuse project aimed at converting a football stadium into a neighborhood park, a civic center, and an underground parking in Tariq el Jdideh, one of Beirut’s densest districts.

The brief

The Beirut Municipality aimed to achieve two objectives:

  • Building a neighborhood park and a civic center in a neighborhood that severely lacks public spaces
  • Building an underground parking to help solve traffic congestion, 30-40% of which is caused by vehicles looking for a parking spot

Our response

  • Reconverting the football stadium into a park that integrates programs geared to different constituencies: walking/cycling paths, seating/relaxing areas, children playgrounds, and tennis/volleyball/football courts
  • Designing a civic center that can be used by the community and includes a library, a gym, an IT center, and a multipurpose hall
  • Designing an underground parking with a capacity of 2,000 cars that is seamlessly integrated within the park
