Saida Bus Terminal
Vision for a national transportation network

Project description

The Saida Bus Terminal and Railway Station was part of a national effort aimed at rehabilitating public transport infrastructure and services throughout Lebanon. The Saida hub of this national network was set to be constructed near the central Nijmeh Square, thus linking this major southern coastal city to the rest of the country. The project design intended it to include:

  • Arrival and departure points for inter-city buses
  • A central taxi station below the bus terminal
  • A bus depot and service station for storage and technical backup
  • A regional train station (part of a subsequent phase of the project)
  • Supporting facilities including a central station hall, ticketing and information facilities, and a post office
  • A large public parking
  • Shopping areas next to the station hall, the waiting areas and the bus boarding deck

A large separate department store, spread over four floors, was also intended to be part of the development. Such a facility would have helped extend the dimension of the project beyond its core transportation function and integrate it within the urban and social fabric of the southern Lebanese city.
